From the October 24, 2007 Picture Business Mag.com comes this fantastic article about wireless/digital picture frames. I can’t improve on it, so here it is in its entirety, straight from the source.
“We absolutely love the amazing evolution, along with the sudden impressive emergence, of the digital picture frame category. What can’t these things do today? Stills, video, music, wireless sharing capability, changeable frames, increasing internal memory - incredible.
Seeing as these units have added such a wide variety of functionality, several manufacturers have begun offering this product in unique sizes. Digital Foci recently announced a keychain model to their one featuring a 1.5-inch LCD screen and 8MB of internal memory. An included Li-on battery offers up 9 hours of battery life.
PhotoVu has gone in the other direction, recently announcing a 22-inch widescreen display model. The PV2265W lists for $1,299.00 and features a 16:10 aspect ratio and a 1,680 x 1,050 res screen. This model also features built-in Wi-Fi for networking and can stream images directly from photo Web sites via RSS.
Continuing on the “On the Wi-Fi Front” for a moment. . . Digital Spectrum and MediaStreet have all recently come to market with wireless frames in a variety of sizes, so a product that screamed for wireless now has plenty of models to choose from, all offering a variety of features within the Wi-Fi set-up.
Lastly, and again on the decidedly high-end, comes Ceiva’s new 8-inch Wi-Fi model that can actually dock with Whirlpool’s new centralpark Connection refrigerators - the idea here being to enable consumers to display hundreds of images without using hundreds of magnets. The eventual marriage of digital photography and the kitchen fridge is finally here.
We have just one thing to ask of these manufacturers - please remember to offer one, relatively inexpensive model that simply displays pictures, in slideshow form, when you stick a card in it. Don’t forget the non-techies among us that will jump at that product. We understand from chatting with a few of the manufacturers in this market that the cost of LCD alone makes hitting a really low price point a challenge. Hopefully those costs come inline a bit more as the popularity of the device continues to grow and perhaps a $50.00 4-5 inch unit will someday soon be possible.”
I completely agree!

PC Magazine Online had a really, really good article on their website last Thursday about several different wireless/digital photo frames. Writer Molly K. McLaughlin did an excellent job comparing and contrasting several major brands, and if you are in the market for a wireless/digital photo frame, and I sincerely hope you are, this article would be a really good read before you made your final choice.

In her article, McLaughlin states that “. . .Still, there are many things to consider before making your purchase, including screen size, picture quality, ease of use, and media compatibility. We’ve reviewed several digital photo frames, each which offers different features and levels of quality. Most come with remotes, which is definitely a plus, since the on-frame controls aren’t
very convenient (plus they force you to get up from your chair). Some include onboard memory so you can store images right on the frame, while others offer multiple ways to transmit your photos: via memory cards, via USB — even wirelessly.

The article discusses the Kodak EasyShare EX811, the Pandigital 8.0″ Digital Photo Frame (DPF-80-2), the Image Moments 8.0-inch digital picture frame (IMT-081) from Digital Foci, the Westinghouse DPF-0561, and the Westinghouse DPF-1021.

Digital Foci’s Image Moments 8-inch digital photo album frame has been one of the better digital photo frames on the market, and now the company has announced that a new version of its Image Moments 8 digital photo album frame will debut at the Decor Expo, held September 7-9, 2007 in Atlanta, Georgia.
Insert any digital camera memory card into the Image Moments frame and the user can display photos on a number of interchangeable picture frames. You can also copy photos to the frame’s internal memory.
The 8-inch digital LCD screen, with its 800 x 600 resolution and 500.1 contrast ratio guarantees an excellent view of all of your pictures. With the Digital Foci Image Moments, you can also use almost any kind of frame you desire; this is one of the VERY few digital frames that allows the switching of frames. If you’ve still got any fancy carved or sterling silver frames from your wedding stored away somewhere, get them out, because with the Digital Foci frame, you can use those pretty frames!
Besides being all pretty and unique in appearance, this frame has 256 MB of internal memory, which means you can store as many as 1500 pictures. The frame can accommodate all popular memory cards, memory sticks, CompactFlash, MicroDrive, SD/HC, MMC, xD-Picture Card, and MS Duo-MS Pro Duo - these and others are fully supported.
This Digital Foci frame also has a
USB slot to support computer connection.
There are multiple playback options: “Photo Slideshow Mode” automatically displays your photos with options for random photo play, transition effects, and slideshow intervals. There is also a “Folder View Mode” to browse through photos in “Photo Thumbnail View.” You can also playback MP3 music, zoom-in for a close-up, rotate or pan, and adjust brightness.
Image Moments 8 is priced at $200 and will become available in November 2007.
Look at it. It’s awesome.
