Do You Trust Your Fridge?

Posted on Jul 15, 2008 by Emily Logan at 5:21 am

Smart kitchen appliances that connect to the web have captured the imagination of many businesses over the years. But, despite many different attempts, no connected appliance has truly caught on.

This may come down to trust.

Check out the recent post on this topic over on our other blog, InformationAppliance.com.  Frame Media VP of product Karen Donoghue recently discussed the increasing availability of connected devices and the issue of trust and adoption of these new technologies.  Check out the blog post and Fox Business News article over on the InformationAppliance blog.

I found this site from a link on a friend’s blog:

http://guusjem.blogspot.com/2008/01/library2play-thing-5.html.

I really never considered how something like a wireless picture frame could have applications outside a personal home until I read the post below written by Jane about using Zune to view e-books. As a librarian, this seems like an invaluable tool as we strive to bring our libraries up to date and re-examine the role of the library in the community. I can imagine a real functionality to having wireless frames with e-books available both in a library and in a personal home but connected to the library. Many libraries are exploring e-book options, and the capability to send a book to a patron’s home via a wireless device has potential that bears exploration.

I also liked Emily’s post about trusting my fridge - personally, I’m ready for flying cars and “smart fridges”, but I guess I can understand some people’s hesitation.

Finally, I enjoyed Jane’s post about the new JOBO digital frame - I like the idea of using the same technology used to take the moon photos, and I really like that you can change this frame’s “clothes” to match different environments. I think I’d do metallic in my shiny futuristic “smart kitchen” and black or other neutrals in living rooms, etc.

Cool, informative blog with interesting information.

The newest Maytag AW83948DR side by side refrigerator actually can connect to a wireless network and send out email alerts if there is a power outage, just imagine what technology will be in the kitchen in 20 years!
