What You’ll Watch On Your WEG
WiFi-Enabled Gizmos (WEGs) will have enormous appeal to the 18-34 demographic because users can gaze at TV on the screen in their lap, both old-school and new-school.
An example of old-school is this breaking info:
Walt Disney Co.’s ABC has struck a deal with AOL allowing its full-length prime-time shows to be available free on the Time Warner Inc.-owned portal. ABC shows will be available on AOL starting 9/20/2007, a few weeks before NBC Universal and News Corp.’s Fox are expected to kick-off their jointly owned online venture Hulu. Hulu will make NBC and Fox programs available on several major Web portals including AOL. CBS shows, of course, are already available on AOL.
An example of new-school is what Joost is doing. Joost (founded by the same guys who created Skype, which is now owned by eBay) describes itself this way:
“What’s Joost? It’s free TV, with the choice to watch alone or with friends. Joost is packed with internet tools such as instant messaging and channel chat, allowing people to really share the TV experience. It’s a completely secure platform for content owners that respects their rights, while protecting and enhancing their brands. And it’s an incredibly flexible way for advertisers to reach a truly global audience, in ways that really work. Joost isn’t just video on the internet - it’s the next generation of television for viewers, content owners and advertisers everywhere.”
And now Ripe Digital Entertainment has struck a deal with Joost to offer three of its digital networks. Under the agreement, Joost will carry RipeTV, OctaneTV and FlowTV. RipeTV (and note the primarily 18-34 demographic appeal here) focuses on beautiful women and comedy, OctaneTV on motor sports and FlowTV on hip-hop music and culture.
