Professor Steven Combs, of Ivy Tech Community College, Talks About Frame Placement and Grammar in the Conclusion of Our Interview

Welcome to what is, regretfully, the last part of our conversation with Professor Steven Combs, the Inspector Gadget of local Fox TV 7, Evansville, Indiana, and respected Instructional Technologist professor at the Evansville campus of Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana.

FrameMedia: Might a college “advertise” itself via slideshows or video content on a wireless digital frame, if the frames were strategically placed? Where would you recommend the frames be situated?

Professor Combs: Obviously, curricular information is very important, and this would be my recommended focus for all community advertising. slides that contain images and audio about careers could be made exciting and dynamic. Digital frames in the High School Counselor’s offices that could regularly and remotely be updated with curricular information would be an effective location. Libraries would be another good target.

FrameMedia: Is video an important feature for most customers, or do you believe these devices wil be more passive in most circumstances?

Professor Combs: As I’ve probably suggested in previous answers, in my opinion, video is secondary to audio and images. I think there are many stories to be told, and a significant amount of information to be disseminated without video. Not to mention the fact that video eats up memory and bandwidth. The concept of KISS applies here.

FrameMedia: Is there anything you could enlight us with, about your experience with the wireless digital picture frame? Your reputation as an expert, Inspector Gadget, precedes you!

Professor Combs: I think I have shared the majority of my experiences and thoughts in previous answers. First and foremost, I am a gadget geek. I love gadgets and I also enjoy finding unique ways to use them other than the manufacturer’s suggested use. As a reader of Make Magazine, I am also interested in taking these products apart and learning how they work and how to make them work better, harder, and smarter. Wherever you find me, you are going to find a gadget.
